Airtel Launch on January 12 in Sri Lanka

January 5, 2009 · Filed Under Mobile, News, Sri Lanka · 23 Comments

At last, Bharathi Airtel has decided to launch their products in Sri Lanka. Today they’ve launched an aggressive advertising campaign in mass medias and electronic medias.

Today I saw bill boards of Airtel everywhere around Colombo. I’m glad finally Dialog got tough competition, and they’ll think of quality service. Followed by Airtel, RTEC is also entering Sri Lankan as a mobile operator.

The company on Monday announced its Lanka launch with ads in local newspapers. Ahead of Airtel’s entry, other operators have slashed tariff rates and are offering discounts with cellular connections.

Airtel is investing $200 million in the Sri Lankan operations and is replicating the outsourcing model in the island country. “It is an extension of the same business model. The company is leveraging its Indian partnerships,” said an analyst.

Airtel has outsoured IT operations to IBM while Huawei is rolling out networks. Bharti Telesoft, a part of the Bharti group, will offer value added services.

The company bagged license for Sri Lanka in early 2007 and hired Amali Nanayakkara as the CEO in October that year. She was earlier working with Unilever in Sri Lanka as Director Marketing in the Personal Care Division.

Airtel has hired largely local people for operations in Sri Lanka. Around 20 people from Airtel India are currently working there, looking after the launch.

Receive Money from PayPal – Sri Lankan Context

November 6, 2008 · Filed Under Make Money, Sri Lanka, Tutorials · 8 Comments

We can withdraw money using this technique, but debit card company charging a lot as fee. Found another way to withdraw money to Sri Lankan Bank. Check it out

PayPal

PayPal

Two years back, I could still remember that we Sri Lankans can’t open PayPal account. Now things have changed and we can open an account in PayPal. But the most annoying thing is we Sri Lankans can’t receive money on Pay Pal while our neighbors such as Indians can receive money.

If you registered an account as Sri Lankan user, then you can’t receive payments from other Pay Pal users. In the other hand if you registered as a Indian, US user you can receive money to you PayPal account but you’ll have a sending limit (500 USD) and you can’t cash that money.

If your sending limit $500 reached then you’ll not be able to send money from your PayPal account. If you’re to send more than $500 then you have to verify your account by adding a credit card.

Recently one of my friends found a way to make it cash. You can withdraw the money to Get A Freelancer.com’s account and then you can withdraw the money using their debit card.

I have already requested for a debit card from them and they have approved my card too but yet to receive my card. Once I receive my card I’ll let you know the answer for the million dollar question, how much convenient will it be?

* Personally I’m not encouraging anyone to do so, till I learn the reality.

Get Paid for Incoming calls

November 3, 2008 · Filed Under Sri Lanka · Comment

This kind of promotion techniques are popular in western countries, but for the first time Sri Lankan company has come up with this idea. Yes, If you’re receiving an IDD call then you’ll be entitled to some money.

As per lankabell web site,

Effective immediately, every incoming IDD call on a Lanka Bell phone will earn its user 50 cents for every minute of the call, regardless of its duration, country of origin or how many calls are received for a day, the company announced.

I don’t know how it’s possible, but seems Lankabell will receive some money from international operators while their called placed to Lankabell powered phones. Most probably Lankabell wants to share a part of income they make from incoming IDD calls.

Anyway, Sri Lankan Telecommunication costs are getting cheaper, but it should get even much cheaper to reach all Sri Lankans.

Beware of Edna and Manchee Products

Update (2/11/2008):The Munchee Lemon Puff brand of Ceylon Biscuits Limited was exempted from the recent melamine controversy on receipt of negative results by Ministry of Health. In sequence the product has now been removed from the list of prohibited items.

The Swiss authorities have ordered the withdrawal from shops of biscuits from Thailand and Sri Lanka tainted with the toxic chemical, melamine.

They say traces of the chemical were found in LomonPuff Munchee biscuits imported from Sri Lanka. They’ve urged other European countries to follow them.

In Sri Lanka Dr. Ajith Mendis, Director General of Health, told that Swiss authorities are yet to inform them on the withdrawal of Sri Lankan products.

“Now that we were told, of course I would be taking measures to get these buiscuits tested,” he said.

The judiciary has issued an interim order against the distribution and selling of Edna chocolate products. The order was issued after considering a petition by the Consumer Affair Authority (CAA) which said it is suspicious whether the company has used milk tainted with the toxic chemical.

Colombo Additional Magistrate ordered the CAA to produce a report on its investigations on 28 October.

Test results on the leading milk powder brands Nespray, Anchor, Kotmale, Maliban and Diamond have proven to be free of Melamine, Minister of Consumer Affairs Bandula Gunawardena said.

With more and more milk products from China and Taiwan having problem. We really have to check where the things are produced. Here is a way to differentiate Taiwan made products and China made products: by looking at first three digits of its Bar Code.

If the first three digits are 690, 691 or 692 – China made

If the first three digits are 471 – Taiwan made

IPTV in Sri Lanka from SLT

October 1, 2008 · Filed Under Entertainment, Sri Lanka · 2 Comments

Sri Lanka Telecom recently introduced IPTV in Sri Lanka. IPTV is simply a TV broadcast over the copper telephone line. To have this IPTV in your home you must have ADSL.

I was watching a demo of IPTV and it was very interesting. Especially the VOD (Video on Demand) is an very interesting feature. Say you have a favorite show at 7 PM but when you come home it almost 8 PM and you missed your favorite show. If you have an IPTV in your home you don’t have to worry. You can simply browse and see your favorite show at your convenient time. Also note you can forward and rewind your favorite shows. Damn cool isn’t it? Read more

Unlimited Dialog Mobile Broadband

September 24, 2008 · Filed Under Internet · 9 Comments

Long awaited unlimited HSPA broadband is offered by dialog. Interesting stuff in this initiation is HSPA dongle for 6000 SLR. If you are to buy one, then you need to spend around 18,000 SLR – 20,000 SLR.

Though it is said unlimited download, there is a Fair User Policy which may affect you. Fair user policy limits your download speed with your download volume. Basically, if you’re a freak downloading each and everything from net, then your download will affect other user’s downloading experience in the network.

Torrent lovers will have hard time with this package, but normal users can get maximum out of it. Currently SLT ADSL has no Fair user policy attached to it, so we can download any amount of software, games, and movies from torrent sites and file sharing sites. Read more
