Sri Lanka to Import Electricity from India

March 23, 2008 · Filed Under India, News, Sri Lanka · 3 Comments

Energy crisis has reached its peak in Sri Lanka. Day by day need for energy in Sri Lanka is escalating, but the supply is insufficient. Nowadays Sri Lankans are enjoying electricity bills (??). In whole Asia, Sri Lankans are paying highest bills than any other nations. Sri Lankan government is seeking for several alternatives and come up with several ways to solve this problem out.

  • Coal Plant
  • Import Electricity

Government has taken initiations to build Coal power plant in Trincomalee and Nuraicholai. It is a long term project so we can’t be expecting it to start and work from tomorrow. Also it’s strongly opposed by environmentalist that it’ll cause harm to the environment, but do we have an alternative other than accepting this project?

Latest hot news in energy sector of Sri Lanka is Electricity import from India. Indian government has agreed to offer power from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Cables under the sea will be built and reception center are expected to build in Anuradhapura and Mannar. Government says it’ll bring down the cost for the electricity production. Feasible studies are undergoing and constructions are expected to start by next month.

I’m pretty sure; India will love this initiation as they can boost their influence in Sri Lanka.

Beautiful isn’t it?

March 21, 2008 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 4 Comments

Your friends are getting married. You watch them with enthusiasm, and you talk to yourself, “Beautiful isn’t it?” Let me tell you the truth, for lot of people marriage is like sticking your tongue on a frozen flagpole. It looks like fun when you see friends doing it, so you say: “I’ll give it a try just once”. Next thing you know you stuck, full of regret. Praying to god “please get me out of this with my dignity…

It does not have to be like that my friends… It does not have to be like that.

After meeting the rite person in the first place, well my friends that is up to you.

From that first, destined meeting…to the sweet innocence of the first date.

The first time you say “I love you”.

She didn’t hear you clearly and she asks “what did you say?”

And you say… “What a view”!!!

Tibet Should be FREE

March 18, 2008 · Filed Under Uncategorized · 5 Comments

Japan, China, Singapore, these are the three nations that I admire in Asia along with India. These are the nations that showed the world, what Asians can do? We can do better than you! Singapore is a tiny nation which is rejected by Malaysia, but now today it is one of the most powerful economies in the world. It’s showing the courage and willingness and commitment of Singaporeans. In the other hand Japan, as we all know, developed into a developed nation after the devastating World War II.

India is another nation which is a role model for accepting and enjoying the diversity. I know there are some ethnical issues in India, but compare to countries like Sri Lanka they are far far better.

China is one of the super powers in our region and has the potential to challenge any nation in the world. Especially Chinese authorities have a good relationship with Sri Lankan government. Even during Indo-china war Sri Lankan government supported Chinese. I always admired this nation, and its Iron ruling policy. I talked with many Chinese people. They all say “I have no issues living it China. I have everything and I’m fine out there. I like Chinese government”.

So it seems that Chinese people like the government but not the western authorities.

These days burning issue in CNN and BBC is the riots in Tibet. What is actually happening in Tibet? I was reading several materials and I found that china invaded this small nation. The leader Dalai Lama has flown to India. New Delhi welcomed him with two hands.

Now Chinese government blaming that Dalai Lama is directing the riots in Tibet using his cliques. Also Chinese government saying that for the unity of China, Taiwan and Tibet is important for them. Still china has no influence in Taiwan. Taiwan which is enjoying the company of USA is so far safe from super power China.

Here my point is, if set of people or an ethnic group doesn’t want to live with the mother nation then what is the point of keeping them using control? It will lead to the development of up going riots.

TIBET SHOULD BE A FREE INDEPENDENT NATION

Enable & Write in Sinhala Unicode

February 19, 2008 · Filed Under Sinhalese, Sri Lanka · 13 Comments

There are many of my friends who study with me in university are happy with English and they don’t wanna read or write in Sinhala, over the internet. They keep on asking “how did you type in Tamil machang?”, but they’ll never make an attempt to write in Sinhala over the net.

Soon lot of people, who don’t know English will also come to computer especially for internet. In that time they should have a proper support or a proper base in their own language. Comparatively in Tamil, there are many communities working actively to accomplish these kinda tasks.

In Sinhala, I hardly see a community that work with a will. I think at least now you guys should start to work on this matter. First of all, you should be able to read and write in your own language.

In Vista, it has a built-in support for Sinhala but in Win XP you need to install an extension pack. . Don’t ignore it. Follow the link and activate the Sinhala Unicode in your computer.

Apparel Industry – A Hope to Sri Lanka

February 11, 2008 · Filed Under Sri Lanka · 2 Comments

On 8th of February I got an opportunity to visit MAS holdings’ plant in Pannala. We got some knowledge about MOS and SAP. While they were explaining these managerial and technological terms, I realized that Sri Lanka’s economy will (as a matter of fact already) depend on apparel industry.

In 2005 apparel quota system came to an end. As the results, many small apparel companies have closed their operation because they can’t find an overseas customer. In the mean time companies like MAS holdings, Brandix, Hirdaramani have developed their own strategies and competing with global giants. We have a huge competition from India, china, South American countries.

Each country have their own advantages, for example Chinese advantage is the low cost of production, while south American countries are enjoying less lead time. Sri Lanka’s advantage is the 20 years of experience in the industry.

For example MAS has developed their own brands and exporting them to countries like India. In India MAS’s intimate wear having a high demand. Their target is middle class of India, where they have lot of surplus to spend.

Last week tea export has reached 1 Billion USD, but still apparel continues to be the first source of foreign exchange. More than 50% of export is apparel.

Sri Lanka’s apparel industry has more than 20 years of experience. They can utilize their knowledge and experience to compete in the international market. In my personal opinion I think MAS and Brandix doing well in this aspect.

Hope it’s a hope for Sri Lanka!

Are universities created for mobs?

July 25, 2007 · Filed Under News, Sri Lanka · 3 Comments

Yesterday again there were clashes in Kelaniya University, and some of students got badly injured. From the first day I entered university it is the case. These students unions are created for the sake of undergraduates, but now these unions are fighting like India and Pakistan.

Science people call themselves as ALAYAS and rest of the students call them POTHAS. We are some of the victims in the war between alayas and pothas. I think external political support or influence is one of the reasons for this pathetic situation.

Whenever this type of situation arises I simply take my bag and walk away from the scene. It did work a lot. I don

Shame on you!!!

June 8, 2007 · Filed Under Sri Lanka, Tamil · 3 Comments

SRI Lanka’s Supreme Court today ordered an immediate halt to the eviction of minority ethnic Tamils from the capital, a day after hundreds were expelled at gunpoint.

The Court issued the order following a complaint by a political activist group that yesterday’s police operation was a violation of fundamental rights.

“The court will hear the case on June 22, and in the meantime the police Inspector General was restrained from carrying out any eviction of Tamils,” a court official said.

Human rights activists have said the expulsions amounted to a “collective punishment” on the Tamil community.

Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry has insisted the operation, in which hundreds were bussed out of the capital to the war-torn east and north, was necessary to prevent bomb attacks by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The Tamil Tigers have been fighting for separation from the Sinhalese-majority south of the island since 1972.

Nine people were killed in and around Colombo, a city of 600,000 people, in two blasts last month.

The rebel infiltrators were believed to have used cheap lodgings similar to those targeted in the police raids.

This is a news that I copied from an international news agency

Tamil Wikipedia 1000 Articles CD Project Proposal – Version 1.0

January 4, 2007 · Filed Under Tamil · 4 Comments

Preamble
Tamil Wikipedia is a user created, free encyclopedia started in 2003 as part of the Wikipedia project which began in 2001. The main and ambitious objective of the Wikipedia is to bring together and give access to all world knowledge in all languages. The altruistic objective, open spirit, and the enabling wiki technology and process lead to the creation of more than 1.5 million articles in English by 2006, and about 6000 articles in Tamil.

Barriers to Tamil
Unlike English which has massive resources and inherent technological advantages, Tamil is limited in resources and reach. Most of the Tamil speaking population do not have computers or access to the Internet. Even if they do have computers, they are not connected to the Internet. Moreover, there are technological shortcomings in reading and typing in Tamil via the computer.

The Need for the Tamil CD in Sri Lanka
In recent discussions with Tamil Wikipedians from Sri Lanka, it has become evident that Tamil Wikipedia is or becoming an important source of information for them. Lack of access to library or books, and the notable price in purchasing books are significant barriers to learning. Moreover, Tamil Wikipedia can be more current and relevant source of many type of information. Along with Wikipeida’s sister projects it can truly be a importance source of knowledge in Tamil. As a multilingual project, it can also encourage and help students learn other languages as well.

Unfortunately, as noted before the Tamil population in Sri Lanka does not have access to Internet, even if they can manage power supply and computers. Thus, putting selected number of quality articles in CD can be valuable to them.

Not Just in Sri Lanka but in TN Many TN schools do not have reliable Internet connection. Internet has not reached TN villages. Thus, the CD is not jus for Tamils in Sri Lanka, but for Tamils in TN, and all over the world.

Current Proposal
Currently we are considering 50 articles in each 12 top category areas (Tamil, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Geography, History, Society, People, Culture, Literature, Arts, Religion). There may be some overlap. Another 400 articles can supplement depth coverage in important topic ranges. Or we can limit the topic range and increment the depth coverage. It really depends the audience, and our resources. In addition, we can include articles that can help learn English or Japanese or other languages.

We need volunteers
If we want to do all this, we have to have more volunteers. Our main source of volunteers has been from the Tamil blogshpere. Unfortunately, the Tamil and Tamil Nadu academia is very silent and not engaged with Tamil Wikipedia at all. The “serious” writers or literature people are not engaged with Wikipedia to the extent they can. The contribution form certain expert areas are minimal or none. The geographic spread of contributors is also of notable concern.

However, there has be more interest forthcoming from all circles. For instance, notable writer from Canada A. Muthlingam has shown an active interest in Wikipedia, and is attempting engage others as well. Professor Selva has also encouraged his colleagues and friends to contribute to Tamil Wikipedia. Many others have shown great interest, but direct contribution has been slow in forthcoming.

Any one can edit Tamil Wikipedia. And we welcome all, not just domain experts, writers, and students. But people of varied interests, all have something to contribute. Even if you are not comfortable with writing Tamil, there are many other activities that can be done such as graphics, programming, maintenance, layout design, photography, audio video content generation etc.

Please note that Tamil Wikipedia is neutral, non-profit, non-political fully voluenteer driven project which main purpose is to build a quality Tamil Wikpedia using the Wiki technology and process as the means. So, join us and share some of your time and your thoughts.

Regards,
Tamil Wikipedia Community
