Where to buy Comics in Sri Lanka / Colombo

Compare to Europe and US we have very little amount of Comics fans in Sri Lanka. As the result you won’t find many comics books in Sri Lankan book market. I have been haunted by many comics fans in Sri Lanka time to time about the availability of books in Sri Lankan market. I’m writing this post for everyone who would ask me the same question.

US and Europe, especially Europe has a rich comic culture which is still continuing and blossoming in their countries. But we don’t have a rich comics culture. Even the small time local comics publishers closed down their business during 90’s due to the domination of mass media such as TV and Cinema.

Okay, let’s cut the crap and come to the point. Where can I buy comics books in Sri Lanka??. My answer is, you can buy comics books in many major books stores in Sri Lanka including VijithaYapa, Cargills Book City, M.D. Gunasena etc but you’ll disappointed by looking at their collection. Mostly they’ll have some TIN TIN books and Asterix books. Nothing more…

If you are a real comics fan go to Cargills Book City at Majestic City and check out. They have few comics books. You want more?? Then directly head towards Vijithayapa book store at Crescat, Colombo – 3. You’ll be surprised to see the collection they have. You can find books from Wolverine to Tin Tin. They have good number of graphic novels too. So don’t miss out their store. Beware good books will cost you about 1500 LKR. Some books even more than 2000 LKR.

Well, that’s for English comics fans. Here comes more information for Tamil comics fans in Sri Lanka. Tamil comics were on peak during 70s, 80s and it started to fade after 90s. There was bunch of Tamil comics publishers mainly form Tamil Nadu, India. But currently there is only one company publishing Tamil comics books. Even then they are not doing it regularly. From the year 2012 Prgash publishers from India started to publish Tamil comics in good quality papers equal to international standard.

Tamil Comics

Good bye Clarke

Clarke lived in Sri Lanka from 1956 until his death in 2008, having emigrated there when it was still called Ceylon, first in Unawatuna on the south coast, and then in Colombo. Clarke held citizenship of both the UK and Sri Lanka. He was an avid scuba diver and a member of the Underwater Explorers Club. Living in Sri Lanka afforded him the opportunity to visit the ocean year-round. It also inspired the locale for his novel The Fountains of Paradise in which he described a space elevator. This, he believed, ultimately will be his legacy, more so than geostationary satellites, once space elevators make space shuttles obsolete.

He had 3 wishes, one of his wishes is to see lasting peace in Sri Lanka as soon as possible! :(

Good bye Clerk. We Sri Lankans miss you!

Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows – Review

WATCH DEATHLY HALLOWS TRAILER

Harry Potter and deathly HallowsFinally I have finished the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7). One of the best books I have ever read in my life. Here I?d like to share some thoughts about this book and the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Believe me I won?t make any spoilers here.

Usually HP stories starts in Private drive, but in this book story starts in Malfoy?s house. The whole story is dark and bloody, anyway with voldermort what else can we expect???

In this book Ron and Hermonie drop the school and join with Harry Potter to hunt the horcruxes down. In the mean while they learn about Deathly Hallows as well (I can?t talk about Deathly Hallows, since it?ll lead me to a spoiler).

Snape is also playing a key role in this story, I wont? talk much because again it?ll lead to a spoiler. However here many myths about Snape, Lily potter was revealed by Rowling.

Not like the book 5, Harry Potter and the Order (Though it?s my fav book till I read the final book) of the phoenix this book is moving on a breathless pace. Finally there is a war between death eaters and rest of the innocent wizard community.

Order, DD Army, some well wishers join together and fight against the dark lord and his armies in Hogwarts school. Anyway you can easily predict the end of the story, Hats off to Rowling for this fantastic book.

All in all it?s a wonderful book!

Let?s talk about the movie OOP movie. It?s indeed a total disaster. Movie is nothing compare to the book. Many scenes that I have expected are either cut-off or narrowed down. So sad so sad.

May be it?s a problem when converting books into movies, but Lord of the rings is a good example how to convert a book into a movie.

Though you?ll watch this movie for sure, it?s not worth watching this movie.

Harry Potter 7 & Torrents

Finally most expected book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) has come to the market with big BANG. As a matter of fact typical Sri Lankans can’t afford that book. Since I’m a typical Sri Lankan and I don’t have 20 Euros to buy the book I went to torrent.

For god’s sake torrent is illegal, but I got no choice.. After some time the price of the book will come down so I can get that book. Till that time I have to read the downloaded book.

I got the book and I was reading it, usually story starts in private drive but this time story starting with a secret meeting of vodermort. In second chapter only Rowling moving to private drive..

So for the time being I’m damn busy with my book and I won’t be able to write any posts in either Tamil or English. Hope it’ll have a happy end..
