Firefox “The MOST used browser in Europe”
There are enormous numbers of complaints over Internet Explorer for not adhering internet standards. IE is a product of Microsoft and Microsoft always had its own way of working with technology. They don’t care about the standards set by the industry but they’ll set their own standards, then only they could control the market.
Microsoft IE came to market to compete with Netscape Navigator and they are pretty successful as Navigator production line was closed down last year. In the line of victory Microsoft has earned good number of enemies such as Linux, Firefox, Apple etc.
Consecutively several years, IE continues to be the market leading browser software in the cyber world. Slowly but steadily Firefox started to eat the market share of IE. Later Google’s chrome also joined the battle and caused severe damage to IE.
According to Stat Counter web, for the first time in the history of world, Firefox has beaten IE in Europe. Today Europe may be tomorrow it can be Asia or North America. It’s been almost 2 years since I forgot IE. I love Firefox and will stick with it. What I love most in Firefox is the wide range of Add-ons they offer.
Is this the beginning of an end?? (Yeah… for Microsoft)
Holly Crap! Dialog First to Pilot HSPA+ at 21 Mbps
People were rumoring about this 21Mbps connection and it’s true and Dialog going to offer this service to Sri Lankans. This happened to be in trial phase right now and later it’ll be expanded to major cities like Colombo, Kandy etc. Most probably it’s gonna cater the demand of corporate sector, not for just you and me
I’m not going to fall for 21Mbps story as I’ve heard about their 7.2 Mbps and later how it went down to 1Mbps.
Here an excerpt from the article in Daily mirror
Dialog Telekom PLC, Sri Lanka’s flagship telecommunications services provider, announced the pilot launch of its HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access also known as HSPA Evolution), technology in Sri Lanka, becoming the first mobile operator in the South Asian region to employ this next-generation technology. With HSPA+ customers can experience download speeds of up to 21Mbps, and uplink speeds of up to 5.76Mbps. HSPA + technology is currently available on a pilot basis at the Dialog Future World in Darley Road, Colombo 02 and Dialog plans to extend the pilot network across key locations in its 3.5G network over the next few months. Supun Weerasinghe – CEO Dialog Mobile said: “This pilot service is a clear indication of Dialog’s commitment to offer the best in technology to our customers, resulting in a user experience that is unparalleled. Wireless data applications that are smarter and offer greater flexibility will shape the future of broadband, which in turn has become a vital element of the mobile product.
Dialog will continue to be at the helm of this broadband innovation in Asia as we deliver upon our promise of The Future Today”.
HSPA+ offers mobile users faster response and less latency for media-rich applications, including high-definition video streaming, web surfing and other next-generation wireless applications with high bandwidth requirements.
Upon the successful completion of the proposed trial phase, Dialog will progressively expand its HSPA+ coverage across its 3.5G network spanning Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya, Trincomalee and other major towns in Sri Lanka. Dialog operates the largest and widest 3G/3.5G network in the country, offering high-speed internet access. Dialog supports a range of cutting edge services for enterprise as well as consumer segments including but not limited to mobile TV, mobile video portals, multi party video conferencing, mobile video surveillance and 3rd Generation roaming across 55 countries.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Sri Lankan is a hot spot for pirated software. From the day I know I can buy a Windows CD for just 100 LKR (Aprox $1). Later government started take action on the shops selling pirated copies of Windows. Government started with Windows and stopped with Windows. They never went ahead and worked against piracy afterwards. Still you can find loads of pirated softwares in the market.
But when it comes to Anti-Virus protection people are going for genuine products. They never went for pirated copies as most of the time pirated copies failed to protect their computers from Viruses and trogons.
Most of the people are attracted towards Kaspersky, though conventional antivirus softwares such as symantac and Mcafee available in the market. Main reasons are, user friendly interface of Kaspersky, its efficient and effective in working with virus and internet security and above all it’ll rarely mess up with the system.
One of my friends was using Bitdefender, and it’s such a pain. It’ll eat your system resources and most of the time it’ll start to conflict with your programes. My friend’s SLT ADSL connection was failing all the time and when he uninstalled BitDefender and installed Kaspersky nothing happened.
I bought a 3PC licence for 3000 LKR (only for Sri Lanka and Maldives) in Unity plaza and we shared it among 3 of us. Literally each licence costs about 1000 LKR. If you’re to go for a Single Licence, then you’ll have to spend 1700 LKR. That’s why it’s good you collect three people and buy a licence. It’ll be cost effective
I’m not saying that Kaspersky is the best. But throughout my experience, Kaspersky has done a good job compare to any other Anti Virus, Internet security programme.
Please do share your experiences with Anti-virus software.
PS: According to one of my old campus lecturer, all viruses are created by Anti-virus manufacturers to sell their product.
Facebook Update and Notification via SMS
I don’t know what’s going on, but Facebook officially giving SMS update for Sri Lankan mobiles along with UK, USA, Canada and Maldives.
To start the process log-in to Facebook and go to settings and then click on Mobile tab. Dialog has come up with a complete user guide for this process, therefore I’m not going to write about it.
Just after the mobile number confirmation you can choose your own SMS options in facebook such as what type of notifications to receive etc.
Unfortunately this service is only available on Dialog and Mobitel networks. Real sorry for Huth, Tigo, Airtel users. I’m not regretting that I’m still with Dialog
Now Download IE 8
Microsoft is proclaiming Internet Explorer 8 (IE
finished and will be releasing the final bits for download on March 19.
Microsoft plans to make the bits available as of 9 a.m. PT on Thursday. Interested parties will be able to grab them from the Internet Explorer 8 Web site, officials said.
Update: The final IE 8 bits are downloadable now from here for Windows XP and Vista. The final version isn’t meant for installation on Windows 7.
Microsoft officials will launch officially IE 8 during the Mix ‘09 morning keynote on March 19.
There are very few changes between the Release Candidate (RC) IE 8 code that Microsoft delivered in January and the final bits, officials said.
Starting with the RC, Microsoft began offering users a downloadable Compatibility List of sites which automatically default to the older, non-standards-compliant version of Internet Explorer 7 in order to lessen compatibility problems with IE 8. Since January, Microsoft has tweaked that list a bit, removing sites which have since updated so as to work properly with the more standards-centric IE 8, and adding new ones that aren’t standards-mode compliant. Otherwise, the tweaks to the product have been few.
Microsoft is planning to push IE 8 to users via its automatic updating mechanisms, but has yet to set a date as to when it will do so. In the interim, downloading the IE 8 code from Microsoft’s Web site will be the way interested users can obtain the latest release of the Microsoft browser.
Microsoft also plans to bundle IE 8 with Windows 7 when that operating system is launched, most likely later this year. Recently, officials said they plan to offer users the option of “removing” IE 8 from Windows 7 in order to try to head off antitrust punishments likely to be doled out by the European Commission overseeing the Opera browser-bundling complaint against Microsoft.

[UPDATED] Yahoo’s Messenger in FaceBook – Official
Earlier I wrote about how Google is getting addicted to Twitter. Now Yahoo getting addicted to FaceBook. Yahoo officially releases a facebook application to access yahoo messenger in facebook.
To add a Pingbox to your page, visit the Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox application page on Facebook. The same customization tools are available in the Facebook version, so you can personalize your online and offline greeting, choose from dozens of designs, and if you wish, require your visitors to give themselves a nickname before they can IM you.
With the Pingbox app, your friends can IM you from your profile page even when you’re not on Facebook.
Earlier this week I wrote about how to add Yahoo Messenger to your Facebook profile. It’ll enable the profile visitors to chat with you via yahoo messenger, even though they are not signed into Yahoo Messenger.
People have complained yahoo that they are always shown as offline even when they are online. This is because your Yahoo! network presence being set to show you as offline.
To fix it, be sure you’re logged into the Yahoo! network (e.g. you see your name up at the top of a Yahoo! page) and then click the link below. Hitting that link will toggle your online presence back to “on”. Your Pingbox will then show you as being available when you’re online in Yahoo! Messenger. Note that you’ll only show as online in your Pingbox when you’re signed into Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, Yahoo! Messenger for Mac, or Yahoo! Messenegr for the Web. Signing in on a mobile device or to IM in Yahoo! Mail will not show you as available on your Pingbox.
IMPORTANT: Changing your Yahoo! network presence to online also means that you will be shown as online within other Yahoo! sites such as Yahoo! Groups, message boards etc. – anywhere the online presence indicator (

) appears within different Yahoo! products.

Note: After you click the above link, you’ll be taken to a blank, white page. That is by design. You won’t see any visual confirmation of the change.
New Generation iPod Shuffles are out!!!
Are you ready for the NEXT GENERATION OF IPOD SHUFFLE?????? Yeah, finally Apple has announced new type of iPod shuffle. Most interesting feature of this product is in-built voice over feature. It’s been a problem for iPod shuffle users to check out the song title, artists as they don’t have display panel. Unlike iPod Nano, shuffle had no display panel. You can use this voice over feature to listen song titles, artist names etc.
It has controls near the ear bud. You can increase volume, browse track, create play lists using this handy control.
Above all you can also create play lists as per your interest. New iPod shuffle is half a size of previous iPod shuffle but it can hold up to 1000 songs as it has 4GB built in memory.
Check out whole set of dazzling features of iPod Shuffle by yourself
As usual, it’ll take time to reach Sri Lankan market or else we need to risk by going eBay. Apple is not shipping their products to Sri Lanka, probably legal issues.

Airtel limits the unlimited broadband with FUP
Airtel mobile broadband is stirring some interest among us and we have started to think of migrating from Dialog mobile broadband to Airtel Mobile broadband. Some people have gone one step ahead and unlocked HSPA modem which is locked by Dialog.
Today Indians are screaming that Airtel has introduced Fair user policy and they’ve cut down the speed by 50%. Oh Shit…! Yeah traitors!
Now most of the Airtel broadband users have to be careful at anytime Sri Lankan Airtel can also impose the same rule out in Sri Lanka. Applying Fair user policy and cutting the speed down. On top of all Airtel has come up with a document about FUP.
I have decided to push back my plans of migrating to Airtel. We’ll wait and see what these Airtel people are up to.
