Google’s Tamil Dictionary

October 20, 2009 · Filed Under Google, Internet, Tamil

There are so many online dictionaries available for English-Tamil-Tamil. The most popular and comprehensive one is Tamil Wiktionary (sister project of Wikipedia). It has good number of words especially in the field of current technology and happenings.

Today I found that there is a new comer added to the list of online Tamil dictionary. Yeap, the new player is none other than Google Dictionary.

Google Tamil Dictionary is nowhere near to the quality of the Wiktionary, but still worth a try with their simplified interface.

    good find mayu. guess they may use google translation kit data for this (considering that some meanings are amateur and based on phrases)

    i feel this has good potential as it evolves.

    Good news. Hope Google will use this dictionary to include tamil translations in their translate service soon. But how can i run Tamil -> English translations? It didn’t work when i tried.

    Looks like google is using information from Tamil Wiktionary or TVU glossary without attribution. If true, it’s shame on you Google.

    @Ravi
    I don’t know the source but as usual the simplified interface is better. But the content wise they need to improve a lot. But it very clear that the Google Tamil Translation is still a distant dream.

    @Harini
    There are no translation tool available for Tamil. This is only a dictionary. If you’re referring to Tamil to English translation, that is also working. Check out Tamil

    @SUndar
    As I said earlier, I’m not sure about the source.
