iPhone in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankans are very unlucky fellows when it comes to iPhone. Apple has announced about a new version of their iPhone OS which will enable you to send MMS and it’ll also allow you to perform copy and paste functionality.

Meanwhile Apple has released a new model of iPhone (known as iPhone 3GS). This model got much more features such as built-in video camera etc.

You can buy iPhone with an operator contract for about $99 and iPhone 3Gs for $199. Unfortunately iPhone is not available in Sri Lanka and none of the operators are supporting it.

If you see someone with a iPhone, he is either using a iPhone like fake phone or illegally bought iPhone.

Sometime back Dialog came up with the iPhone deal and everyone was talking about it. Later they dropped the plan and the page also went missing from their site. If we can get one of our local operators to support iPhone we can get iPhone with a connection for about 11, 000 LKR, which is far way cheaper than all Nokia smart phones.

Hope to see iPhone in Sri Lankan market soon.

  4. Rs 11,000 but plus the contract which means we would end up paying same or more than a nokia at the end of the contract.

That’s true, otherwise they won’t give you for dat price!
If you can’t afford a Smart Phone, then this contract is a good opportunity :)

No one is permitted to sell iPhone in Sri lanka. If Apple wants, they can sue Dialog.

I don’t think Mobitel is in this smuggling business.

Yep, it’s illegal to unlock their phone, but they don’t seems to care about the people who unlock their phone.

We can buy unlocked iPhone 3Gs from an Apple Store. (from US,Canada) I have checked the price and its 699 CAD without tax for a Iphone 3Gs 16GB.

And I’m pretty sure that will work with any SIM in Sri Lanka. (since iphone supports 4 bands)

You are talking SHIT man. You can always buy a factory unlocked iPhone in many countries like Australia and Hong Kong, and use the sims here in Sri Lanka, and still install original updates without locking your iPhone. Perfectly legal and the original one from Apple. I know coz I own one.

iPhone 3G with update v3.1.2 on Dialog GSM network.

  30. I’m foreigner now working on a project in Colombo. I brought an iPhone from my home country in SE Asia and able to roam here using Dialong/Mobitel line. So I bought Mobitel Smart Prepaid and successfully use it with my iphone. I even use Mobitel prepaid broadband to surf and the speed quite decent. So I guess all telcos in Sri Lanka can support Iphone, you actually have to get one first, and if you want to, find a factory/hardware/officially unlocked one so you can always update your firmware. Software unlocked version, you have to unlock manually every time you update the firmware.
