Receive Twitter Alerts on Sri Lankan Mobiles

February 18, 2009 · Filed Under Mobile, Sri Lanka

Some time back Twitter stop offering SMS alerts to most of the countries. Many people were angry over this move of twitter. Twitter’s argument was Cost cutting, which is a slogan to most of the IT companies these days.

Sri Lankan users never had a feature to receive SMS alert from twitter, therefore we had no problem with the move of Twitter.

Developers at tew2.com, took it as a challenge and offering Twitter alerts as SMS. Their service has wide coverage including Sri Lanka.

Yesterday I tried and got my self registered with twe2.com. When you register in their site you don’t have to register with a separate user ID, you need register with Twitter user ID and password.

Once you registered with twe2.com, they’ll send you an activation code to your mobile. Give the activation code to twe2 site and activate your account. Thereafter you can receive alerts whenever someone sends you a direct message or a reply.

In your dashboard you can restrict the number of SMS to receive per hour, messages you received by SMS and some more SMS stats.

When I first heard about this facility, I was wondering how they monetise this feature. Answer is they embed advertisement in the SMS they sent. I don’t mind receiving SMS with an advertisement as long as I receive free SMS from twe2.com. They also should earn some money. I completely understand it.

Normally we don’t get this kind of feature to Sri Lanka. Most of the time we are left behind or over shadowed by Indian market It’s so good that twe2 has recognised small markets like Sri Lanka.

I tested it with Dialog, hope it’s working with other networks too. Some people are not receiving confirmation code. This is the explanation given by twe2.com

Unfortunately we don’t have any control on when the Mobile Network actually sends you the message so if there is a delay then its out of our control. This may vary country to country and Mobile Network to Mobile Network.

I’m glad I’m a lab rat in twe2.com (As per Chanux ;) )

Did you try with Tamil Unicode??
interesting… it’s supporting Tamil means we’ll be able to receive Sinhala updates too. As long as your mobile supports Tamil & Sinhala Unicode you can receive updates in your language.
