Dialog unlimited mobile broadband – A Cheat

October 21, 2008 · Filed Under Internet, Sri Lanka, Tutorials

Finally I got my hands on Dialog Mobile Broadband. As many people complained the actual speed is much slower than the promised speed.

When I try to download I found that download speed goes up to 1.28 Kbps per second (160 KBps) but the promised speed is 7.2 Mbps down link. Even though I have full HSPDA coverage in our home.

I called Dialog Mobile Broadband hot line and they don’t have an answer for it. They want me to try in a different location and check.

As far as I hear from my friends M3 download speed also the same much slower than the promised speed.

I’m just curios to know, is there anyone who reached beyond 160 KBps downlink?

Don’t even think of downloading from rapid share while browsing in Dialog Mobile Broad band. As users are sharing same IP address, only one person online can download from Rapid Share. Meanwhile if others try to download they’ll get an error message saying “Currently you’re downloading a file. Please try again”. Others have to wait till the user finishes the download. It’s so annoying.

All I can say is, it’s a pure cheat. Since the downlink speed is low, will dialog change the fair user policy??? Never… They’ll never do it.

    Mayooresan,
    Sorry to hear about the issue. May be it’s better to stick with Routing and Remote Access with SLT adsl connection. I would like to hear from others what actually works what will not work. I also have suntel PCMCIA card that is also a shit. How is Mobitel HSPA modem? has anybody tried it?. What connection actually works easily with Linux? (I am right now on Linux)

    @Asanka
    Adow now I’m your old friend huh?
    I’m happy dat I saved your ass :D

    @umapathy
    I checked with many of my office friends, most of them have the speed of 1.2 Mbps not 7.2 Mbps.

    M3 users also complain about the same issue.

    I don’t know whether we can use it with Linux, but dialog now offering Laptop with Ubuntu Linux for this Mobile broadband, so It must work with Linux. Personally I never tried.

    I checked with Win XP and vista, its working fine.

    hey guys,
    no where in the world broadband operator has promised the speed & dialog has never promised in any advertisement that it will provide the speed of 7.2mbps, they have used the term “upto” that is network has the capture to provide the speed upto 7.2mbps. Therefore guy the BB speed totally depend on network conduction, number of users, time band & so on. Therefore pls read or analysis the product before purchase product,

    FYI
    To get the committed speed in the broadband we need to have “lease lines” for a 1mbps connection in sri lanaka we have to pay Rs. 100,000/- so we have got the best in the market with low rental :smile:

    *************Dialog broadband work with Linux as well********* I’ve tired & required to install the drivers if u r using vodafone e220

    Thanks Mayooresan & Ronaald,
    I checked with some one else who is already having a Dialog Mobile Broad band connection in Trincomalee. 1.2Mbps is sufficient for my work but will I be able to get this speed in Trincomalee? I know that their WiMax works fine most of the time. (Being in Sri Lanka I won’t be able get speeds like 50Mbps http://www.betanews.com/article/Comcast_to_roll_out_50_Mbps_wideband_to_Philly_Boston_NJ_NH/1224775643)
    Which is the hassle free connection works in Sri Lanka with Windows/Linux? Has any body tried Mobitel’s HSPA connection or Lankabell’s WiMax?

  7. Ronaald on October 24th, 2008 6:02 pm

    Umapathy
    Trincomalee u will be able to get the same speed

    it would be linux

  8. Mayooresan on October 24th, 2008 6:18 pm

    @Ronald
    Thankz for the information on Linux.

    Are you workin gin Dialog? They advertise as 7.2 Mbps check out the site

    @Umapathy
    Wimax working fine in Trincomalee. One of my friendz using it and its pretty fine.

    HSPDA coverage not available in Trincomalee (so I doubt whether you’ll be able to get 1.2Mbps) and 3G coverage is not consistent. Two weekz back I came to trinco and tried my USB modem in my home (Court road), but it connects in GPRS (56 Kbps) and tried in my friendz house (near rajawrothayam street) same story.

    I think Wimax would be a better choice over HSPDA connection.

    Lanka bell connection is very poor, specially their customer care and tech support so thats obviously not a good choice.

  9. indi on October 24th, 2008 10:54 pm

    There is 3G in Trinco, and Akarapattu, and Pottuvil, and Ampara, and Batti. HSPA is a software upgrade, basically, but I think you can get decent speeds there regardless. Haven’t tried it there tho

  10. Umapathy on October 27th, 2008 9:08 pm

    Thanks Mauyrasean,
    Dialog WiMax works fine in Trinco :) . Only competitor seems to SLT aDSL. Based on my tests my only doubt is that it looks the service become better once SLT started offering aDSL connection in trinco. The question remains will Dialog continue to offer good service or will they degrade the service once they are sure that the customers won’t switch to SLT aDSL. One INGO requested me to setup network in which I choose SLT aDSL based on a fear about their fairuse policy since these polices are difficult to implement in an organisation.

    Regarding the Dialog Mobile broad band it is terrible in Trinco. I have not even heard good comment from the user. One Internal told me that that the Dialog is so slow. Indi’s and Ronaald’s statements are invalid with the ground realities in Trinco with respect to Mobile Broad Band

    There are VSAT connection available for with the monthly rental Rs 35,000+ with more than 1Mbps that can be used any where in Sri Lanka and even in Africa. There are different providers charge differently for this service. Rs 100, 000 for 1Mbps connection is an exaggerated statement. (One can also easily reach 1Mbps from Routing and Remote access service). I used VSAT before and the service providers was very supportive they even offer chat based support unlike poor customer care from Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan telecoms companies first need to look at rest of the world how they are offering the support rather than comparing with other provides in Sri Lanka. Anyway existing leased lines can be switched to WiMax as long as we are sure that the will be a minimum guaranteed bandwidth is there irrespective of the fair usage policy.

    Pls letme know… Which is the best solution for mobile broadband in silanka(Not in colombo)? Dialog, Mobitel or Lanka bell…?

  14. Mayooresan on November 4th, 2008 2:05 pm

    @Susantha
    Non of the providers qualify for it. If you’re to use within colombo, then go for dialog as itz most cost effective.

  15. Rafi on November 4th, 2008 2:32 pm

    Thanks buddy,
    Really this should be reported to Dialog. This must not to be shared the comments and just leave it. Why don’t we inform these things to Dialog and get solution quick as possible.

    I don’t think speed is big issue. But, really IP is big problem for the Dialog broadband connection. I sent a mail to Dialog regarding this problem. But, still no response for that.

    I made a article about this problem at my blog. I advice mayooresan and others to see that once.
    http://rafshare.blogspot.com/2008/10/your-service-bug-please-consider-this.html

    Please sent mail to Dialog services department (service@dialog.lk) and report to them continuously.
    Good Luck!.

    @Rafi
    Read ya post, I totally agree with you

  17. Hasitha on November 16th, 2008 1:37 pm

    Does anyone know whether the Lankabell wimax connection gives the promised 512kbps(64kbps) downloadspeed….at least 50 KBps leave out 64KBps.If there is anyone using this connection please leave a comment on this matter as Iam considering of getting it …as Lankabell is the only service provider thats offers broadband in my area

  18. Mayooresan on November 16th, 2008 7:38 pm

    @Hasitha
    Remember none of the providers offer the promised speed. You may get arnd 56 KBps.

    I heard that LankaBell technical support sucks kiyala, so think before you leap.

  19. Hasitha on November 16th, 2008 9:07 pm

    Thanx for your comments Mayooresan…..but I will need to know for sure whether Slt adsl is a better opton than Lankabell.Currently only Lankabell offers broadband in my area and from what Ive heard SLT is going to introduce adsl in about 2 months time.If i wait for the SLT ADSL connection Iam sure I will get speeds in excess of the promised speeds as there arent going to be many users from this particular exchange so i will get the maximum speeds.However since Lankabell is already available and they have brought down the connection fee to 3000RS Iam considering this connection too.So i would like to know which option would be better, since Iam not so sure about the download speeds that could be achieved through Lnkabell.

    I also heard that SLT is going to reduce their 512kbps Home express package from 2250 to 1000RS.If anyone knows more about this please leave a comment

  20. Mayooresan on November 16th, 2008 9:14 pm

    @Hasitha
    I don’t know about this price cut and all but SLT ADSL is THE BEST OPTION compare to dialog Wimax and LankaBell.

    Consistent connection and availability is high in SLT ADSL. I think you better wait for SLT than committing for LankaBell.

    Regarding speed, in SLT ADSL also you won’t get the promised speed (note that none of the providers give promised speed)

  21. DJBP on November 25th, 2008 12:49 pm

    Hey guys,

    Even tough they promised a higher speed, practically it’s not possible to give such speed. It’s all marketing tricks. theoretically a wireless technology like WiMax or Wireless Broadband the maximum speed is 7.2Mbps but actual speed may vary between 54Kpbs – 1.5Mbps. There are many reasons which affects the speed of a wireless link.
    1.Environmental Conditions
    2.Interference from other equipments has same frequency
    3. Line of sight
    4.Broadcast Power
    5.Receiving Power
    6.Antenna Quality etc,etc.

    So no ISP in the world can provide the maximum speed.
    Don’t blame to the technology or the ISP that is a limitation of the Technology.

    I use Mobitel HSDPA and it gives good speed and reliability and now I want to make it my main connection and downgrade the ADSL package I have with SLT.

    Hi
    I use a LankaBell broadband connection and its quite good..very stable and promissed speed. It’s a non shared connection just 1700 per month.

    great!
    Bonny

  25. Lasi on May 28th, 2009 10:05 am

    I get around 4.0 Mbps download speed near Thorana junction, Kalaniya. With HSPA you will not be given a leased line connection. like all other operators Dialog also giving a shared media. You will be getting 7.2 Mb if you are the only user in that particular BTS. Try downloading a flash movie using a download manager and check the speed.
