Enable & Write in Sinhala Unicode

February 19, 2008 · Filed Under Sinhalese, Sri Lanka · 13 Comments

There are many of my friends who study with me in university are happy with English and they don’t wanna read or write in Sinhala, over the internet. They keep on asking “how did you type in Tamil machang?”, but they’ll never make an attempt to write in Sinhala over the net.

Soon lot of people, who don’t know English will also come to computer especially for internet. In that time they should have a proper support or a proper base in their own language. Comparatively in Tamil, there are many communities working actively to accomplish these kinda tasks.

In Sinhala, I hardly see a community that work with a will. I think at least now you guys should start to work on this matter. First of all, you should be able to read and write in your own language.

In Vista, it has a built-in support for Sinhala but in Win XP you need to install an extension pack. . Don’t ignore it. Follow the link and activate the Sinhala Unicode in your computer.

Yahoo rejects Microsoft’s Bid

February 12, 2008 · Filed Under Internet, News · Comment

Finally yahoo announces that Microsoft has undervalued their company. I got the following news from yahoo press room

After careful evaluation, the Board believes that Microsoft’s proposal substantially undervalues Yahoo! including our global brand, large worldwide audience, significant recent investments in advertising platforms and future growth prospects, free cash flow and earnings potential, as well as our substantial unconsolidated investments. The Board of Directors is continually evaluating all of its strategic options in the context of the rapidly evolving industry environment and we remain committed to pursuing initiatives that maximize value for all stockholders.

Apparel Industry – A Hope to Sri Lanka

February 11, 2008 · Filed Under Sri Lanka · 2 Comments

On 8th of February I got an opportunity to visit MAS holdings’ plant in Pannala. We got some knowledge about MOS and SAP. While they were explaining these managerial and technological terms, I realized that Sri Lanka’s economy will (as a matter of fact already) depend on apparel industry.

In 2005 apparel quota system came to an end. As the results, many small apparel companies have closed their operation because they can’t find an overseas customer. In the mean time companies like MAS holdings, Brandix, Hirdaramani have developed their own strategies and competing with global giants. We have a huge competition from India, china, South American countries.

Each country have their own advantages, for example Chinese advantage is the low cost of production, while south American countries are enjoying less lead time. Sri Lanka’s advantage is the 20 years of experience in the industry.

For example MAS has developed their own brands and exporting them to countries like India. In India MAS’s intimate wear having a high demand. Their target is middle class of India, where they have lot of surplus to spend.

Last week tea export has reached 1 Billion USD, but still apparel continues to be the first source of foreign exchange. More than 50% of export is apparel.

Sri Lanka’s apparel industry has more than 20 years of experience. They can utilize their knowledge and experience to compete in the international market. In my personal opinion I think MAS and Brandix doing well in this aspect.

Hope it’s a hope for Sri Lanka!

She is ya sister

February 2, 2008 · Filed Under Entertainment · 2 Comments

A young man went to his father one day to tell him that he wanted to
get married. His father was happy for him. He asked his son who the
girl was, and he told him that it was Samantha a girl from the
neighborhood.

With a sad face the old man said to his son, “I’m sorry to say this
son but I have to tell you that the girl you want to marry is your
sister, but please don’t tell your mother about this.

The young man again brought 3 more names to his father but ended up
frustrated causing the same response from the dad.

So he decides to tell his mother. “Mama I want to get married but all
the girls that I love, dad said they are my sisters and I mustn’t tell
you.

His mother smiling and said to him, “Don’t worry my son, you can marry
any of those girls. Because You’re not his son!!”
